Have you ever gone to the fridge to get something and forgotten why you were there? Have you ever gotten lost even though you have a map? Do you get confused about your left and right? Well our ‘Thinker’s Lab’ program is just for you!
Thinker's Lab is an intervention program based on the world renowned Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) program that is currently being implemented within the 1/2 and 3-6 Learning Communities. In 2018, FIE was only available in private schools but in 2019, DMPS is one of a handful of public schools, and the only in the west, implementing this life changing program.
Within Thinker's Lab, students explore and develop their metacognitive skills, that is, thinking about thinking, through participating in a series of learning tasks. Students analyse the task, or problem, develop goals and systematically explore and evaluate the strategies required to achieve their goal. Importantly, students participate in collaborative discussions about how to apply their developing strategies and understandings to real world contexts.
In 2019, ‘Thinker’s Lab’ sessions run three times a week. Once a week students participate in a small group or 1:1 intervention session with a qualified Feuerstein teacher, and then two whole class sessions towards the end of the week. The small group and 1:1 intervention sessions enable teachers to target students requiring extension or additional learning support.
